Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 Released

Microsoft on Tuesday released Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Office 2007, a big update to its productivity suite. With the next major version of the suite—Office 10—not due until early next year, SP2 will be the dominant version of the world's leading productivity software for a while.

The most newsworthy capability added by the service pack is support for a broader range of file formats, Open Document Formats (ODF, the open-standard document formats used by OpenOffice) and Adobe PDF in particular. It also allows users to uninstall service pack updates individually, using Microsoft Service Pack Uninstall Tool for the 2007 Microsoft Office Suite. PCMag.com got an early look at the service pack, though not at the uninstall tool.

It's been speculated in the tech press that the support for Adobe's page definition format finally being baked into Office was a result of a court ruling or agreement with Adobe, but since many other third-party products have long included the ability to save to PDF format, the move seems more a sign of Microsoft acknowledging the popularity of the competitor's format. Incidentally, the option for saving as PDF also offers to save the file in Microsoft's competing XPS format.

A representative for Microsoft explained the move as follows: "As far as including PDF, this is not a result of a court ruling or some other agreement. The decision to add PDF, and XPS, support to Office is consistent with our long held belief that customers should be able to choose the document format that best meets their needs in a given situation. This is why Microsoft has supported many formats in Office in the past and is including support for these additional formats in SP2."

Microsoft also claims improved performance with multiple graphics elements present, better printout quality, and as the Office Sustained Engineering blog notes, "Improved interoperability using standard DrawingML markup to describe the visual properties of the SmartArt graphic and Substantial improvements to Forms-based authentication support in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SPD." Those last won't affect most everyday users, but there are many fixes and app-specific updates that will be welcome productivity adds. Access gets the ability to export reports to Excel spreadsheets, Excel gets improved charting functionality, and Outlook and PowerPoint get improved performance.

Service Pack 2 updates all editions of Office from Basic to Ultimate, and all Office applications. This means not just the biggies—Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint—but also InfoPath, Publisher, OneNote, Groove, Access, SharePoint, Project, Visio, and InterConnect. It also updates shared ancillary programs such as Proofing Tools, Printing Assistant, and Viewers, plus updates for all languages.
Service Pack 2 includes more than 2,000 updates in all. For this reason, the update can take a while if you have a lot of apps that haven't been updated.

The Microsoft team warned me that the update could take more than an hour to install, but on a 2GHz dual-core Athlon Vista machine with 2GB RAM, it only about 15 minutes. Of course, the update time depends on how many Office apps are installed on your system, how up-to-date they are, and the speed of the system itself.
When I tried the new Saving to PDF feature, it worked without a hitch, and now the option for that and for OpenDocument Text format appear right in the main Save As choices in Word. In my tests, PDFs saved complete with fonts, formatting, and images.

I did run into a snag on an XP machine: I was unable to install SP2 on an XP system running Office 2007, getting the error "A failure occurred during installation." The error noted a Knowledge Base article I could look up to see what was going on, but the KB article had not yet been posted at the time of my testing. On other test systems, the updater sometimes produced a dialog stating "There are no products affected by this package installed on this system." Despite this message, the Office programs' About dialogs showed that the version was now SP2.

My guess is that because the updater consists of two executable program files, the second did not contain new updates for my setup. When the update is released on Microsoft Update and Download Center, this two-step process may not be necessary.
SP2 also includes server product updates: Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2 and

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server SP2 include fixes and performance improvements. The servers also support more Web browsers, and will run on Windows Server 2008 R2 at its release. SP2 also improves Groove Server's synchronization reliability, LDAP connectivity, and "robustness."

I'm a music junkie, I admit it. But honestly, I thought that I would have appeased all of my pocket music library needs when I upgraded my iPod from 20 to 80GB. It helped for a while, but every so often I find myself deleting yet another 30-minute experimental jazz track from my hard drive to make way for more new music. I have a problem.

iPod repair site, RapidRepair.com has a solution--a temporary one at least. The site today announced the addition of a 240GB iPod hard drive to its list of music player upgrades. No word on price yet, though the site's 120GB hard drive is priced at $189.99, and I'm guessing you can add at least $20 to that price.

AMD Deals With Qualcomm

AMD continued its previously-announced strategy of streamlining its business by agreeing to sell its handheld graphics unit to Qualcomm for about $65 million in cash.

According to the companies, the deal has already signed and closed as of Jan. 19. Under the agreement, Qualcomm will hold back an undisclosed amount for indemnification expenses, plus and make adjustments for employee-related expenses. Qualcomm has already made offers to several of AMD's handheld design teams, as part of the deal, the companies said.

The deal comes as no surprise; said in its fall analyst meeting that it was trying to sell its handheld business, as part of an overall strategy to concentrate on its core microprocessor and graphics businesses; for the graphics portion, the handheld business was not as important. Rival Nvidia also owns a handheld graphics processor, the Tegra, which the company continues to sell.

For Qualcomm, the graphics technology will be integrated into the company's other integrated cores, providing additional capabilities to Qualcomm's system-on-a-chip products.

"This acquisition of assets from AMD's handheld business brings us strong multimedia technologies, including graphics cores that we have been licensing for several years," said Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president of Qualcomm and president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, in a statement. "Bringing this technology in-house creates even greater synergy as we seamlessly integrate the best-in-class multimedia performance AMD offers into our system-on-chip (SoC) products."

Facebook is the latest social networking site to block music Web site Project Playlist. The site allows its users to compile playlists and, until recently, embed them on their profiles on social networking sites. Copyright concerns, however, have prompted these sites to pull their support.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reportedly contacted Facebook last summer about removing the Playlist application, and recently made the request again.

Facebook is working with Project Playlist but must remove the app during discussions to comply with its terms of service, according to a statement.

"Our hope and expectation is that the parties can resolve their disagreements in a manner that satisfies the developer and copyright holder, that continues to offer a great experience to music fans, and that doesn't discourage other developers from using Platform to share their creativity and test new ideas," Facebook said.

MySpace started blocking the site last weekend, according to a note on the Project Playlist Web site.

"We are working hard to get our widgets back up on user profiles across these social networking sites as quickly as possible so our users can continue to share music with their friends," Playlist CEO Jeremy Riney wrote in a blog post. "Until then, your playlists are not lost and you can still share them - they remain available here on Playlist.com, where you can continue to search for music, create and play new playlists."

The move comes two days after Playlist reached a licensing agreement with Sony BMG.

"We are going to make Sony BMG's entire catalog -- including popular artists like Beyonce, Britney Spears, Bow Wow and iCarly -- available to be part of your playlists," Riney wrote.

On Sunday, Intel launched the Q9000, a quad-core mobile chip that partner Acer included in a new notebook the company launched on Monday. Intel also added four new mobile dual-core chips to its portfolio, via updates to its official price list: the Core 2 Duo T9800, P9600, T9550, and P8700.

What's notable about the Q9000 is its price: $348 in 1,000-unit lots. Intel's other mobile quad-core chips all cost $851, with its top-of-the-line QX9300 chip priced at $1,038. In part, that has allowed Acer to market its new Aspire 8930G-7665 notebook at a suggested price of $1,799.99.

The 8930G-7665 allegedly contains the Q9000, although the specs Acer originally listed for the device actually correspond to the QX9300: 2.53 GHz, 12 Mbytes of level 2 cache, and a 1.066-GHz front-side bus. The Q9000 runs at 2.0-GHz, uses a shared 6 Mbyte level-2 cache, and includes a 1.066 GHz front-side bus.

An Acer representative said Monday that the original specifications were a mistake, and that the 8930G-7665 includes the Q9000, with the specifications as listed above.

Otherwise, Acer's new notebook includes an 18.4-inch WUXGA Acer CrystalBrite screen (at 1920 x 1080 resolution), 4 Gbytes of DDR3 memory, a GeForce 9700M GT/512 Mbytes graphics card, a 500-GByte hard drive, 802.11a/b/g, a 6-in-1 card reader, a Webcam, Dolby HomeTheater-class sound, and Windows Vista Premium 64-bit. Swap Motherboard Last Steps

Beginning in 2009, Hewlett-Packard will offer a notebook battery upgrade that is guaranteed for three years.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Boston-Power, a supplier of lithium-ion batteries that will sell its Sonata battery to Hewlett-Packard. Representatives from both HP and Boston-Power declined to divulge many details on the relationship, primarily as B-P is a startup company, ramping production to meet the demands of its first customer.

A representative from HP said that the company will make the Sonata battery available on some mainstream consumer notebooks, without specifying which models. HP's commercial notebook division is "looking at it," a spokesman said.

The Sonata battery upgrade will cost between $20 and $30, the HP spokesman said. HP will market it as the HP Enviro Series program notebook battery with Sonata technology.

The guarantee will cover the performance of the battery, specifically a certain capacity level, according to the HP spokesman. If the battery's capacity drops below the guaranteed level -- a value less than 100 percent, the HP spokesman said -- a user can exchange the battery for another. For its part, Boston-Power markets Sonata as a technology that delivers "like-new performance" for three years, offering the "same, unwavering capacity of a new battery that entire time".

Although lithium-ion batteries have been plagued with a rash of problems, a Boston-Power spokesman said the company "was fundamentally founded on safety. It's a non-negotiable issue.

Toxic Toner Dust Laser Printer

Do cell phones give you cancer? Will excessive computer use make you go blind? Do laser printers emit pathogenic toner particles into the air?

The jury is out on the first two questions, but we can rest easy knowing that we will not fall prey to toxic laser printer dust.

"Contrary to numerous reports, laser printers release hardly any particles of toner into the air," according to data from Germany's Fraunhofer Wilhelm Klauditz Institute (WKI).

The debate made headlines last summer when Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia released a report that said particles released by laser printers were as dangerous as cigarette smoke.

The QUT report said that laser printers release "toner-like" particles into the air, but WKI disagreed with that assessment.

The devices do not release the toxic toner, WKI said, but they do emit ultra-fine particles made of volatile organic-chemical substances (VOCs). "One essential property of these ultra-fine particles is their volatility, which indicates that we are not looking at toner dust," the study said.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, VOCs are present in thousands of products like paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, glues and adhesives, and permanent markers.

Printer VOCs are caused by the fixing unit, which heats up the printer so that the toner will stick to the paper. "The high temperatures cause volatile substances such as paraffins and silicon oils to evaporate, and these accumulate as ultra-fine particles," WKI said.

While this might not sound very appetizing, WKI said that the same level of VOCs are emitted while using a toaster.

WKI did not release specific statistics on levels of VOCs or exactly what health issues these chemicals might cause.

Moral of the story? Small doses. Your office printer is probably not going to kill you, but just as you might crack a window before painting a room in your house, it is perhaps not the brightest move to breathe deeply on a consistent basis near your laser printer.

Second moral of the story? Deal with it. VOC filters tested by WKI were shown to have little effect. "As the ultra-fine particles are not emitted from a specific part of the printer, but also from the paper output, for instance, a filter can only have a limited effect," according to the report.

Symantec on Tuesday announced the release of Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition. Designed for online gamers it maintains full-scale antivirus and antispyware protection without interrupting game play. Gamer mode kicks in automatically when a full-screen program is active, so it also avoids interrupting presentations and movies. At $39.99 (direct) it costs the same as the non-gaming edition.

NAV 2009 already has what's called Silent Mode, which suppresses alerts and notifications. And NAV 2009 already runs background tasks only when the system is otherwise idle. The difference between Silent Mode and the new Gamer Mode is one of control. Gamer Mode additionally lets the user suppress Advanced Protection, Intrusion Prevention, and Automatic LiveUpdate. It can even turn off antivirus protection entirely, though of course this isn't recommended.

The other big difference is in the user interface. All the same controls are present as in the non-game edition, but the main window has a rugged, war-torn appearance that Symantec hopes will appeal to gamers. And naturally it offers the same lightweight resource usage as the non-gaming edition. According to Symantec it "installs in under a minute, uses less than 6 Mbytes memory, adds less than 1 second to boot time and averages scans in less than 35 seconds".

T-Mobile has signed a deal with Yahoo to provide search and ads to its mobile subscribers in the U.S.

A Yahoo OneSearch button will be placed on T-Mobile's new devices, and the two companies will share ad revenue, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The bizarre factor in this news is that Yahoo's service will at first only be available on newer T-Mobile devices, including the much-hyped G1 phone powered by Google's Android software. Even with Yahoo entering the fold, T-Mobile will continue its relationship with Google, according to the company.

Yahoo has been very aggressive in forming partnerships with mobile providers, offering favorable terms and device manufacturer partnerships. The company was named as AT&T's mobile search provider in September.

The mobile search world has been abuzz lately, with the big search players jostling for deals with the nation's leading wireless carriers. Recent reports indicate that Microsoft and Google are fiercely competing against each other for a deal with Verizon. Google, meanwhile, is the default search engine for Sprint wireless devices.

Multihop Relay Networks

Some researchers and futurists believe that multihop relay networks will eventually supplant technologies such as WiMax and LTE. With these networks, wireless signals will route themselves through a series of access points. Like the Internet itself, the route that the data takes is variable, depending on conditions.

By the time you read this, PC systems with Intel's new Core i7 quad-core processor with hyperthreading should be on store shelves, or at least on the ordering page of your favorite online system manufacturer.

The new Core i7 "Nehalem" processor will formally launch at an event Monday night in San Francisco. Many of the details surrounding the new chip have already been released, including a rundown of the new Core i7s and their prices.

The Nehalem/Core i7 architecture has been extensively benchmarked. The complementary X58 chipset which will be used in motherboards tied to the Core i7, has also been reviewed.

The Core i7 improves multi-threaded performance in multimedia apps and games over the previous generation Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Extreme processors. Core i7 requires the new X58 chipset (and consequently new motherboards), since the memory controller is now built in to the CPU.

Systems from high end and mainstream PC builders will be available, including Alienware, Dell, Falcon Northwest, Gateway, iBuyPower, Overdrive PC, Polywell, PowerSpec, and Velocity Micro. Predictably, many of the first few models will be gaming rigs with the 965 Extreme Edition version of the Core i7, but the other two CPU models (920 and 940) will appear in mid-priced and high-end multimedia desktops as well.

Second Generation Mobile

Sprint claims that Xohm's typical (as opposed to peak) speeds will be in the 2Mbit/sec. to 4Mbit/sec. range. And while Sprint hasn't yet provided pricing details, it has said its WiMax offering will be priced similarly to DSL and cable access, which is significantly cheaper than 3G. Even more radically, at least for a company best known as a cellular operator, Sprint won't demand long-term contracts but, rather, will use a subscription model.

Verizon Wireless said it will deploy a competing technology called LTE (long-term evolution), which will have similar speeds to Sprint's Xohm network. However, most observers believe that LTE and similar technologies deployed by other carriers won't start to be available until at least 2011. By that time, proponents claim second-generation mobile WiMax will offer speeds potentially as high as 1Gbit/sec.

Why it's important:
Most of the other disruptive technologies discussed here require fast, affordable wireless access.

What could hold it back:
Some of Sprint's shareholders want to throttle back its WiMax plans and put more energy into the company's faltering cellular efforts, a sentiment that led to the firing of Sprint CEO Gary Forsee. If that trend accelerates, mobile WiMax may be delayed or may not be given the resources to succeed.

Nehalem Intel Core i7 Cheapest Processor

Intel has released the prices of the Core i7 "Nehalem" quad-core processors, which the company has said will ship before the end of November. For less than $300, you can buy one.

Intel also released the new Nehalem processor for review by major hardware and enthusiast sites, including ExtremeTech. The upshot? ExtremeTech concluded that the Core i7 "Nehalem" architecture is a solid performer, offering incremental improvements for gamers but a significant increase in productivity for content creators.

Intel's pricing, however, merits special attention. Three Core i7's will be introduced at launch: the 2.66-GHz Core i7-920, priced at $284; the 2.93-GHz Core i7-940, priced at $562; and the 3.20-GHz Core i7 Extreme 965, priced at $999. All of Intel's prices reflect lots of 1,000 pieces that are sold to distributors; prices for individual parts sold to consumers will be somewhat higher, depending on supply and demand.

Intel has not revealed the exact launch date for the Core i7. Inthe company's third-quarter earnings report, Intel executives revealed that Nehalem would launch before the end of November.

All three processors use the new QPI interface, which replaces the front-side bus; the two cheaper processors use a QPI clocked at 2.4-GHz, while the Core i7 Extreme part uses a 3.2-GHz QPI. All three cores also use 8 Mbytes of shared cache. In addition, the two standard Core i7 parts are rated at 130 watts of thermal design power, the theoretical maximum they will consume. The i7 Extreme processor uses a rated TDP of 150 watts.

All three i7 cores are 263 square millimeters in size, and include 731 million transistors, an Intel spokesman said via an email.

Toughest Phone

Sonim may be a US firm, but so far they've stayed out of the US market, except for the occasional gray-market import of their existing XP1 phone. The reason is familiar: the U.S. market is "a monopoly ... okay, an oligopoly," Plaschke said, where if you're a GSM phone maker, two people (the buyers for AT&T and T-Mobile) control almost all the GSM phone sales in the country.

In other countries, people can buy GSM phones independent of service, leading to a richer and more diverse retail culture, Plaschke said.

That's changed, though, as Sonim has made a deal with ten carriers in a consortium of rural GSM carriers, covering about 10 million people. These guys, it turns out, are a perfect fit for the XP3, as they cover a lot of rugged terrain.

"This is the first-ever exclusive for the rural GSM association," Plaschke said. He said they expect to sell about 50,000 phones in the US in their first year here. That's not a lot in terms of the larger cell phone market, but Sonim's a small company; it's enough for them.

And Sonim's concerns aren't what you'd call consumer mainstream. They're rough-and-tumble. The XP3 has an accelerometer, just like the iPhone's, for instance. But it won't be used for games; it'll be used to detect if the user (say, a lineman somewhere outside of Wichita) has suffered a fall and can't get up.

Similarly, the GPS isn't just for driving directions; it'll also potentially be used as part of a "safety beacon" service that can help folks lost in the wilderness.

With Sonim's older XP1 becoming the XP3, I had to ask, where's the XP2? That number is being saved for an upcoming consumer model, Plaschke said.

"Our two biggest sets of requests have been from soldiers, and from parents of teenagers," Plaschke said. The XP3 definitely strikes me as the kind of phone you'd take to Iraq, but it doesn't have much for the more average phone-destroying consumer. PS3 Selling Faster

Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 video game console and its portable cousin, the PSP, are selling faster than expected and are poised to meet full-year sales targets even if the current economic crisis hurts holiday demand, Sony said on Wednesday.

Driven by solid demand by video games, and the appeal of the Blu-ray disc movie system built into the devices, PlayStation 3 sales are some 30 percent better than Sony's plan so far in its fiscal year, according to Jack Tretton, Chief Executive of Sony Computer Entertainment of America.

As a result, he anticipates sales of the PS3 to reach a previously announced target of 10 million units by the end of the year, in March 2009.

"We are in good shape for that number worldwide," he said in an interview. "We are tracking at 100 percent up over last year ... about 30 percent ahead of where we should be. So sales could slow down and we will still hit our number."

Tretton said sales could be affected by products shortages, which he anticipated would be "not drastic."

"I'd say we are able to meet somewhere between 80-90 percent demand, based on how things are trending," he said.

Sales of the PSP, a $170 handheld device that plays games, movies and can surf the Internet, are 20-30 percent ahead of plan and are well-placed to meet the Japanese company's target of 15 million units sold.

Sony dominated the global video game industry for a decade starting in the mid-1990s, but sales of the PS3 have lagged behind Nintendo Co Ltd's Wii console. It now has to come to grips with a recent price cut for Microsoft Corp's Xbox 360, its other main rival.

'Comes with Music' and similar products from other hardware vendors could help the music industry make up for falling CD sales and cut illegal downloads.

The battle for mobile music is increasingly crowded, with Sony Ericsson launching its music package this month in Sweden, while South Korea's LG Electronics plans a service similar to Nokia's.

Nokia's package will differ from others on the market as users can keep all the music they have downloaded during a 12- month subscription period. There are no charges for tracks downloaded, since the cost is bundled to the phone price.

"'Comes with Music' could potentially bring free music to millions of consumers, radically changing the music industry, and offering a significant threat to Apple's dominance," Strategy Analytics' David MacQueen said in a research report.

"In a market where price and selection are so much more important than brand to consumers, Apple cannot count on retaining users when competing with an offering which seems free to the end user."

Nokia stock was 1.1 percent softer at 12.97 euros ahead of the expected news versus a 0.34 percent firmer sector index. The stock has more than halved in 2008 on industry growth worries and Nokia's third-quarter market share warning in September.

Sony Ready To Fight in High End DSLRs

On Tuesday, Sony Electronics announced that the company will be officially competing in the high end digital SLR category by introducing the Alpha 900, which Sony will officially brand as the "α900".

This new camera will be Sony's first camera to feature a full-frame CMOS sensor dubbed "Exmor," a new image stabilization system for the sensor branded "SteadyShot Inside" and is the first digital camera to include two image processors. The new 24.6-megapixel camera is priced at $2999.99 (body only) and will launch with two new lenses, the wide angle SAL1635ZA and super zoom SAL70400G.

Along with dual processors, the D-SLR will use a newly designed pentaprism mirror box. Coupled with the new 35-mm full frame sensor and twin "BIONZ" image processors, Sony says users will see "a wider dynamic range for natural color reproduction and subtle tonal gradations….reduced noise and high-speed transfer of data." At its highest resolution capture, 6048-by-4032, the a900 can take 5 pictures per second.

The new "Steady Shot Inside" system will combat blur that may occur from slight shakes by adapting the company's "Steady Shot" technology to the senor. This is the first camera to feature an image stabilization feature on the camera sensor itself, which will also be outfitted with an anti-dust and moisture system. Even with the added sensor equipment, the DSLR will be lightweight, at only 1 pound and 14 ounces.

Software improvements are also included. A new "Intelligent Preview" will let users get a preview of images and adjust options such as white balance, exposure, and other features that can help fine tune the picture before taking the shot. A new autofocus system will also aid users in getting the best shot by offering a nine point auto focusing system.

Like most Sony media products, the camera will store images to Memory Sticks, but will also accept Compact Flash UDMA and Microdrive. The camera will interface to computers via a USB 2.0 port and will also have a HDMI mini port to play back photos on HDTVs.

The Sony Alpha 900 is expected to be available in November and available for pre-order on September 10.

Sony's new wide angle SAL1635ZA will feature Carl Zeiss glass, a super wide angle (16-35mm f2.8) and be priced at $1,800. The SAL70400G is a 5.7x super zoom (70-400mm f/4-5.6 G) and will be priced at $1,500. Both will be available in January 2009.

White balance, exposure metering, sharpness and red-eye pre-flash were all modifiable in the manual mode, but with only 3 or for presets for each one, we were left wanting more. That being said, we were never able to get more than a few minutes recorded, thanks to the atrocious battery life (more on this later). To be honest, this camera would have been more appealing as a $200 720p camcorder, stripped of some unnecessary options, but maybe include a light and a Li-Ion Battery.

We weren't too upset about not getting a free trial to Kodak's online galery, because the Kodak Gallery is one of our least favorite online photo hosting sites. The software told us we were allowed to upload as many pictures, at any size we pleased, but navigation was cumbersome, and when we shared galleries or received galleries from other users, it usually took several tries for us to figure out exactly what buttons to click to find the pictures. Even then, we were extremely disappointed that there was no way for our friends to save full-resolution copies of the pictures we shared with them. And therein lies the rub. We can upload as many pictures as we want, but no one can download them. Not without paying, of course. In the age of free photo-hosting services like Flickr, Photobucket and Webshots, its embarrassing that the only way our friends could download pictures was to pay.

We liked the custom install option, as it allowed us to omit the greeting card templates and photo printer (which we do not have) options from the installation, preventing us from having a bunch of stuff we don't want or need on our computer.

The software allowed us to send pictures as e-mail attachments, letting us choose if we wanted to resize for quicker transfer or to keep the original size. We were given basic editing options like rotate, red eye fix and "enhance," in addition to scene balance, color balance, scene effects and "fun" effects. While some effects were pretty useless, we did like the balance options, which were effective and easy to use.

Transfers with the USB 2.0 cable were fast enough, with 15 9MP pictures taking less than 15 seconds to transfer. We liked that it used the ubiquitous SD format, but didn't like the proprietary USB cable.

While we didn't hate the software, it certainly wasn't enough to replace our current setup with iPhoto on our Mac and Adobe Photoshop Album on our PC. That being said, if you were to completely buy into the Kodak Gallery service (which we wouldn't recommend), the integration might be worth using the included software.

Accessories - Poor

Accessories bundled with the Z1275 include a wrist strap, EasyShare software, two AA batteries, a USB 2.0 cable, and a plastic piece to connect the camera to an EasyShare dock or printer (not included). We hate AA batteries. Sure, it's nice to have a Plan B for batteries in case your camera drains them, and finding batteries at any gas station is convenient. Unfortunately, and especially with this camera, this is not Plan B, but more like Plan A. The batteries were constantly dying on us, after less than an hour's use at times. Replacement batteries didn't fare much better, and we found ourselves spending about $10 a week just to keep our camera in fresh batteries. We also would have liked a more standard mini or micro USB cable (instead of the included proprietary one). Not only did Kodak include the bare minimum required to shoot and upload pictures, but they did it without making the experience convenient for the user.
